Designed by Portuguese architect Nuno Craveiro Lopes this brutalist church, commonly known as the “Lemon Squeezer”, was completed in 1962.
Located in Maputo’s Polana neighbourhood, the Church of Saint Anthony of Polana is characterised by its sculptural, flower-like concrete canopy and stained-glass windows.
Restorations, which started in 1992 have preserved both its structural integrity and symbolic significance. The church remains not only a functioning place of worship but also as a local landmark and tribute to Maputo’s architectural heritage.
